One Bermuda Alliance candidate Bob Richards enjoyed a comfortable victory over Progressive Labour Party challenger Neville Tyrrell in Devonshire East last night.Mr Richards, who also took the constituency in 2007, topped the poll with 460 votes while Mr Tyrrell trailed with 340 votes.Speaking outside Elliott Primary School, Mr Richards said he felt Bermudians were looking for change and believed his hard work canvassing had paid off.“The situation in Bermuda is such that the people are looking for a turnaround, they really are, and the count in this constituency reflected that,” he said.“We worked very, very hard and canvassed up and down Devonshire and I think that was a big factor.“Overall I think the population realises that Bermuda is in dire straights.“They want change and want improvement and have spoken in that respect.”Mr Richards added: “I would like to congratulate my opponent who ran a good race; he’s a good guy.“I wouldn’t say I was surprised by the result although I am pleased with it.”Mr Tyrrell expressed his disappointment and believed failing to attract the swing voter had cost him.“I think there were a number of things we did wrong; we took too long to do the roads in Devonshire we just took too long,” he said.“I’m very disappointed; I obviously underestimated or I guess I didn’t do enough with the swing voter.“The people have obviously spoken but I thought I did the work, I really did.”Voter turnout was 71 percent with 800 voters taking part and one spoiled ballot and nine rejected ballots.In 2007, Mr Richards collected 402 votes for the OBA while Mr Tyrrell totalled 375 for the PLP.RESULTS:Bob Richards (OBA): 460Neville Tyrrell (PLP): 340
