Pembroke East Central

Public Works Minister Michael Weeks eased to victory in the Pembroke East Central seat in the seat he first won in a by-election three years ago.Progressive Labour Party candidate Mr Weeks won with 588 votes ahead of the One Bermuda Alliance candidate Terry Hodgson, who tallied 102 votes. The seat formerly held by the late Nelson Bascome is a PLP stronghold.Mr Weeks’ 486-vote margin of victory was up from his win by 343 votes in the 2009 by-election.The Minister thanked voters for believing in him and said: “I promise to deal with one street corner at a time, to help address the crime and violence, and the infrastructure of this constituency — that is the paving of roads, putting in street lights where needed, and speed bumps, helping our seniors feel a little more secure, also helping the young unemployed find jobs. These are things that are not complete, they are ongoing.“I also want to pay respects to my opponent, Mr Terry Hodgson. He is a younger man with a lot of energy. I hope he remains in the community and helps the community where he can. This is not a fight where it is a war, we are all in this together.”First-time candidate Mr Hodgson also referred to the importance of unity following the election campaign.“Win or lose it is all about the people, about putting Bermuda first,” Mr Hodgson said. With the current state of the Island and its economy, Bermuda can no longer afford to be divided, he added.A total of 690 people cast their ballots, representing a turnout of 59 percent.RESULTS:Michael Weeks (PLP): 588Terry Hodgson (OBA): 102
