Bermuda's senior national netball team are on the verge of winning the inaugural Atlantic Cup.This after the Islanders came from behind to edge depleted hosts USA 46-42 in last night's opening match of the best-of-three series for the Atlantic Cup at the Pompey Park Recreation Center in Florida.Goal shooter Danielle Raynor and Goal Attack Ebonie Burgess accounted for all of Bermuda's points. Raynor, daughter of late Hall of Fame cricketer Sheridan Raynor, led the way with 33 points while Lady Bluebirds team mate Burgess chipped in with 13.Last night's win was sweet revenge for Bermuda who suffered a heavy loss against the Americans at July's Americas Federation of Netball Association's (AFNA) Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.Team USA have been depleted by the loss of players from the Northeast still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.Despite losing their center just hours before the start of last night's match the Flying Eagles stormed into a 7-2 lead in the opening quarter. However, Bermuda clawed their way back after taking advantage of some casual play by the Flying Eagles who were also erratic at times.Steady shooting at opposite ends of the court saw the lead swap hands several times. Bermuda led by as much as seven points in the see-saw contest which was eventually reduced to four as USA staged a late rally which ultimately came up short.Commenting on his team's hard fought win, Bermuda head coach Anthony Mouchette said: “Bermuda stuck to the game plan of putting high pressure on the ball carrier to prevent them feeding the circle at will.“The other game plan was to give the shooters many goal scoring opportunities by playing more direct towards goal. In all we had 53 attempts at goal, scoring 46 of them.“It was a total team effort by all supported by the reserves who were a vocal cheering section.”Bermuda can clinch the series by winning one of the remaining two matches to take place today (9:30am and 6:30pm) indoors at the Pompey Park Recreation Center in Delray Beach.Among those in attendance at last night's match was International Netball Federation (INF) president Ms Molly Rhone who was delighted to observe an entertaining game involving two countries trying to improve their rankings.
