Bermuda's table tennis team show off their trophy after winning Division 8, Group B at the North American Teams Competition in Baltimore, Maryland recently. Team members are Dwayne Hill, Jaymo Durham, Zichari Young and Vincent Curioso.

A four-man team of Dwayne Hill, Zichari Young, Jaymo Durham and Vincent Curioso took top honours in Baltimore, Maryland, recently when they won the Division 8, Group B title in the North American Teams tournament. The achievement comes six months after the Bermuda Table Tennis Association was re-established under the presidency of Hill after being dormant since the league folded in 2002.At the Baltimore tournament some 644 players from 158 teams competed in various divisions. After playing in the preliminary rounds, Bermuda were placed in Division 8, Group B where they won six of their seven matches which were decided in a best-five-out-of-nine format. The teams were made up of three players each.Bermuda’s results in the division enabled them to advance to the semi-finals where the team of Hill, Young and Curioso triumphed 5-2 with Young and Curioso winning two matches each and Hill chipping in with the other victory. The trio of Durham, Hill and Young had their work cut out in the final against a young and spirited Barbados team who had accounted for Bermuda’s only loss by a narrow 5-4 margin in the divisional rounds.Young, a former Youth Centre standout and high school boys champion in 2010 when he represented Bermuda Institute in the annual Bermuda High Schools Table Tennis Championships, continued his fine form against the Bajans, avenging his earlier three losses against them as he came from two games down to win 3-2. Supporting Young’s three wins in the final was Hill who provided the other two victories to help the local team to a 5-2 victory and their first trophy.President Hill and vice-president Durham said they were pleased with the team’s performance which they hope will mark the re-emergence of the sport on the Island. An initiative will begin to develop more young talent as well as to invite former players back into the fold with the goal of re-establishing a league.
