There is something very special about the Christmas season which inspires musicians and singers to present concert after beautiful concert of festive music. In fact, many of these events have become eagerly awaited calendar staples.Among the front-runners this year is the Chamber Choir of the Bermuda School of Music, which will present two performances of a carefully chosen programme at Wesley Methodist Church in Hamilton this weekend.Directed and conducted by Ron Campbell, the 33-strong choir will sing its way through what he described as “a lot of interesting and contemporary Christmas pieces, including a selection of spirituals”.“It is good to be really refreshing as well as entertaining,” he said of the programme, which opens with Amy Bernon’s festive madrigal, ‘Throw Open Your Shutters’ and includes British composer Benjamin Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols, Op 28’ featuring soloists Ruth Stovell, Siani Colley-Nester (sopranos) and Matthew Nester (tenor).Antoinette Davis (flute) and Shelton Bean (percussion) will be the soloists in Mary Lynn Lightfoot’s ‘A Festive Fa La La’.Carols will include the 17th century Scottish carol,‘Baloo Lammy’, ‘Hush My Babe’, a Kentucky carol; and the French carols, ‘He is Born’ with 'Pat-a-Pan’.While admitting that in creating his programmes Mr Campbell liked to challenge his singers and also present music which may not be familiar, he also assured that what the audience hears will not be challenging but “very listenable”.Guest artist Charles Callahan, one of America’s leading organist-composers, and a former member of the Bermuda School of Music faculty, is returning to the Island especially to participate in this concert, while current BSM faculty member and pianist Oliver Grant will be the accompanist.Saturday evening’s concert will begin at 7pm; Sunday’s will begin at 3pm to accommodate those who prefer to travel to and from their homes in daylight.Tickets (sponsors $55, adults $25, students $15) are available online (www.premierticketsglobal.com), and will also be sold at the door.Donation forms will be available for those who wish to assist the choir financially.
