Promising tennis players Daniel Phillips and Ricky Mallory III will showcase their budding talents in Florida next month. The Temple of Tennis duo are scheduled to participate in the Little Mo and Mini Mo Tournaments to be held in West Palm Beach and Port Lucie.Phillips is competing in the Under-eight age group at the Little Mo tournament to be held from December 7-12 and the Under-seven age group at the Mini Mo to take place from December 14-17. Mallory will compete in the Under-10 age group at both events. Both players underlined their potential competing overseas earlier this year. Phillips blazed his way to victory in the eight and under mixed singles division at the Frinton Junior Open in Essex, England last August while Mallory captured the Under-10 mixed singles title at July’s Beat the Heat Tournament in Orlando, Florida. The pair are currently undergoing an intense training regiment under the watchful gaze of the Temple of Tennis coaching staff to ensure they arrive in Florida early next month in top shape.“The boys have been through their regiments in terms of sharpening up the fundamentals with match play while simultaneously developing their consistency and fitness,” said Temple of Tennis director Sammy Maybury. “They are sharpening up all 11 shots with the higher level of footwork and sharper angles that we are bringing into the game with the variations of the depth and shallows in order to cover the majority of the court from the perspective of running and delivery.“We have also given them a heads-up and visual of other players (they could potentially play against in Florida) that we have googled so they can see what these players are hitting like.”Phillips, who was invited to participate in the upcoming tournaments by former US tennis scout Martin Blackman, has gone the extra mile in his preparations which include kemetic yoga and meditation and sparring matches against older and stronger opponents.“We have given Daniel sparring matches against guys older than him that he cannot defeat so that he can dig down within himself to take his game to the next level,” Maybury said.“And he is looking really sharp and is right where we want him to be at this time.”Maybury believes the meditation aspect of Phillips’ training will help the youngster maintain composure and focus on the court.“When Daniel plays in tournaments sometimes he has as many as five matches in a day and he needs to keep still and it’s really difficult to get a youngster to keep still when there’s a lot of excitement going on around him,” he said. “Between each match he lays down and goes through a meditation ritual that benefits him in lots of ways.”The duo depart for Florida on December 6 and will be accompanied by Temple of Tennis executives Ricky Mallory, Sarah Fellows and Maybury and coach Gavin Manders.
