PLP and OBA argue over FutureCare

In a social network counter-salvo of One Bermuda Alliance statements on Thursday that FutureCare will remain intact, the Progressive Labour Party yesterday tweeted “The OBA continues to try and have it both ways on FutureCare” from their voteplp account. The OBA had stated at a press conference that FutureCare benefits will not change under an OBA government. Andrew Simons, spokesman for the shadow health board and candidate for constituency 17 had attempted to dispel statements by PLP Pembroke West election candidate David Burt, who asked in October if FutureCare would be “on the chopping block” under an OBA government. He had said in a press conference earlier on Thursday: “Since the OBA says they can do all this while reducing the debt, tell us, what would you cut to make your math work? What is on the line? How much will the OBA cut FutureCare?“The PLP, commenting on the issue yesterday via e-mail, quoted another social media site — Facebook.“A Facebook page entitled 2012 Bermuda Election includes a statement by OBA candidate C. Anthony Francis for constituency 13, that "The current model of FutureCare will be scrapped because it is unfair and unsustainable," the PLP said in its statement. An extensive search for that quote was unsuccessful, but a comment on the Facebook page suggested the quote as reported by the PLP was incomplete, with one post named as being made by Guilden M. Gilbert Jr., stating: “To be fair and honest I have reviewed the commentary on the post that Thomas Christopher Famouss provided a link to and I have to say that C. Anthony Francis did not say FutureCare would be scrapped. He say (sic) the current model would be scrapped and replaced. Apologies to CAF for misquoting him.”The OBA responded to yesterday’s statement, calling it: “reprehensible politics,” and saying: “The Government continues to stoke fear amongst seniors about the security of FutureCare health benefits. That’s the nature of their election campaign. It’s reprehensible politics, but that’s what we’ve come to expect.”The PLP also quoted the OBA’s health spokesman Louise Jackson’s statement in a Royal Gazette article dated March 2011 where she said: "It has got to be means tested as it is not fair.”It said: “The OBA continues to try and have it both ways on FutureCare,” adding: “Yesterday, the OBA's Andrew Simons said, "the OBA supports FutureCare," and that yesterday, OBA deputy leader Michael Dunkley said: “Seniors enrolled in FutureCare will see no change in their benefits.”“Who is really in charge over there, and is the OBA more concerned with gaining power than standing strong for our seniors?” the PLP asked.“The fact is, the OBA is telling you what they think you want to hear and not being honest about what they will cut or how much they plan on adding to the debt. So what is the OBA all about?”The OBA responded: “As our spokesman for the Shadow Health Board Andrew Simons reiterated yesterday: “Once more for the record, the OBA supports FutureCare. We will not abolish FutureCare. We will not cut FutureCare.“In fact, under an OBA Government seniors currently enrolled in FutureCare will see no change in their benefits. So shame on the Government election machine for trying to win seniors' votes through fear-mongering. The OBA believes seniors deserve better from their leaders,” concluding their statement: “FutureCare benefits will not change under the OBA. Period.”
