Grand Slam returning for another two years

The world’s elite golfers will return to Port Royal for the next two years after it was confirmed Bermuda had secured the PGA Grand Slam until 2014.Next year’s tournament will be held at the picturesque Southampton course on October 15 and 16, while the dates for the 2014 event have yet to be finalised.Last month The Royal Gazette revealed the PGA had opened negotiations with San Diego while Hawaii were also rumoured to want the event back.But yesterday Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert announced the showpiece event would be returning to Bermuda for a seventh successive year.“This is great news for Bermuda to have the Grand Slam return for the next two years,” Furbert said. “During the last six years of hosting this event the beauty of Bermuda has been seen in countless millions of households across the world.“I feel this is a great investment in our tourism product and attracts visitors to our shores to enjoy the picture perfect rounds of golf at our world class course.”Furbert added that the terms and conditions for hosting the event are the same as past years.“The beauty of Bermuda came through on camera and was able to depict a beautiful place.“We were successful in not only getting a two-year commitment, but in getting the same terms and conditions. As MP (Randy) Horton says this is our signature event in sports.“Sports tourism is very important to Bermuda and this is our signature event.”Next year’s event will again be broadcast by TNT to a worldwide audience of more than 400 million households in more than 85 countries.PGA of America President Ted Bishop said: “The PGA of America is honoured to continue the PGA Grand Slam of Golf tradition on the island of Bermuda through 2014 at the Port Royal Golf Course.“Bermuda has embraced the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, serving as an exemplary host the past six years and delivering unmatched hospitality and community support for the game’s elite foursome.“We are excited to once again join the Bermuda Department of Tourism in showcasing Bermuda as a premier golf and tourism destination by presenting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to the world.”The 36-hole event won this year by Ireland’s Padraig Harrington features a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000; and fourth place $200,000.
