The tiles have been laid, cement pads for the change bench were to be poured yesterday, the lights are set to go up today and the curtain will come down on a new in-line skating season at the new rink at Pembroke Community Centre tomorrow.“The season is finally going to start. We currently have 119 players registered which is one more than last year and we haven’t even started the season yet,” said President Mike Daly this week in a message to in-line members.“We have minor things to do but that is not going to delay our opening day.”The first action on the new rink was delayed a week while final preparation work was carried out, now all systems are go, beginning with the ‘Learn to Skate” programme for beginners starting at 10.15am with two sessions before the juniors take to the rink at 11.45am, the intermediates at 1pm and the seniors from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.Said Daly: “We will not determine any teams for at least the first week or two in both the Intermediate’s and seniors. The coaches want to gauge the talent level and see how many people we can put on the larger surface at any one time. It will be a while before we have team jerseys also so please bring a light and dark jersey for the scrimmages.”Approximately $13,500 in new equipment has been ordered and it is hoped the equipment will be available for use on next weekend. The ‘used equipment giveaway’ will be in full action this Saturday and next Saturday during all sessions. Old equipment should be dropped off so it can be donated to others. The grand opening of the rink will be Saturday, November 24 at 2pm. The ceremony and festivities will last about an hour with light refreshments to be served. Anyone able to assist as a volunteer during the grand opening should contact Daly at 505-8300 or on mdaly@northrock.bm
