Runner plans 50-miler to help out needy Warwick Academy students
A Warwick Academy parent will run 50 miles to help raise funds for less fortunate students at the private school.Christopher Page will travel to Maryland to tackle the JFK 50 mile on November 17.He was inspired by teachers at the school who gave up their free time to help needy students.“Over the past few years I have noticed that a lot of activity has taken place at the school to raise funds for children including school football practice on Saturday mornings where you’d see teachers selling coffee and cookies and at other times you’d hear about sleepovers being arranged at weekends,” said Mr Page.“When I realised how many families had fallen on hard times I thought how much I would appreciate someone looking out for me in these circumstances, so I am doing the race.“This is very consistent with the culture and ethics of the school, and I thought I’d like to try to do something as well.”The school started the Warwick Academy Student Emergency Fund last year to help families in the short-term that have lost their jobs. All money raised will go into the fund.Mr Page hasn’t run 50 miles before, but hopes his training this summer and participation in local triathlons will see him through. He is looking to conquer the 50 miles in under ten hours.“It is a much further distance than I would typically cover on foot.“I have been training for this with my friend Mark Harris since July.“A typical Saturday or Sunday morning would involve rising at about 4am for a 4.30am start and covering anything from 20 miles upwards, with our longest training being 36 miles.“We are hoping to cover the 50 miles in around ten hours, which means that we have to be very careful that we take in enough water and food to keep us going.“My goal is to finish the distance with a smile on my face and know that the effort has been worthwhile.”Donations can be deposited directly into HSBC account number 010-260628-005 under the memo JFK 50 miles.
