Trailblazing former Mayor Lois Perinchief dies at 86
Former St George’s Mayor and trailblazer Lois Perinchief died yesterday at the age of 86.Ms Perinchief, who was born and raised in St George’s, made history in 1968 when she became Common Councillor for the Corporation of St George’s — the first woman to attain the position.She became an Alderman for the Corporation in 1979 and in 1997, she became the first woman to serve as mayor.In an interview following her retirement from the position of Mayor, Ms Perinchief said: “I felt overwhelmed when I won the Mayor’s election. In past years a woman would have never been considered for such a task, and I topped the poll!”In addition to her work in the Corporation, Ms Perinchief was the first woman to be appointed director of the Bermudian National Bank Limited and the first female director of the Bank of Butterfield Executive and Trust Co in 1986.Ms Perinchief was also honoured with an MBE in 1986, and in 2002 was named an Honorary Soror by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.Grace Rawlins, a long time friend of Ms Perinchief, described the former mayor as a caring woman who was always looking out for others.“She was always very concerned about her community, and was very active in the church,” Ms Rawlins said. “She was a very outgoing person, very friendly. I don’t think I ever heard her complain about anything.”Ms Rawlins also said that Ms Perinchief had a competitive streak and loved playing tennis and table tennis. She would also sometimes brag that she was able to fix a car, if the situation arose.“She was a woman of many firsts, but she still found time run a business, raise her son and ran a home,” she said.
