Fire Safety Week starts

National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief yesterday marked the start of Fire Safety Week by announcing new fire safety legislation will soon be tabled.The Fire Safety Bill 2012 is expected to be put before the House of Assembly in the next legislative session, adopting specific fire protection codes and standards in an effort to improve safety.According to a Ministry spokesman, the Bill will grant Fire Officers the ability to perform risk assessments on premises to ensure that codes have been adhered to, and make recommendations to improve fire safety.“The Bill will strengthen the powers of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service to promote fire safety in premises in Bermuda at every stage of development, from the design stage through construction and use, to demolition,” Mr Perinchief said.“We intend to work with building owners to achieve high standards of fire safety.“The people of Bermuda should feel safe as they go about their daily lives and enjoy themselves at any venue, event or gathering. Fire safety cannot be taken for granted.”
