Seat belt violation leads to additional charges for motorist

A 32-year-old driver who ran away from police after he was caught not wearing a seat belt, was fined $1,500 in Magistrates’ Court.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said Locksley Cummings was pulled over by police officers on October 19 on Frog Lane, Devonshire.Cummings was asked to produce his driver’s licence but told officers he didn’t have one.The officers told him he would be given a ticket and asked for his details.Cummings gave his correct name of birth, but gave his name as “Jeffrey”.The officers searched the police database but only found a Locksley Bruce Cummings in it.Cummings insisted: “My mother named me Jeffrey.”The officers warned him he would be arrested for giving a false statement and asked him to step out of the car.Before he could be handcuffed, however, Cummings ran away.He later turned himself in to police.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 for escaping lawful custody, and $100 for not wearing a seat belt.“If your name is Jeffrey, why is the name of your identification Locksley?” he questioned.Cummings was also fined $100 for not having a driver’s licence and $300 for making a false statement.
