A collection of rarely seen pictures of Bermudian landscapes by Clark Greenwood Voorhees is to go on show in New York.Running December 8 to January 18, next year, ‘Isles of Tranquility: Paintings of Bermuda by Clark Greenwood Voorhees (1871-1933)’ is only the second full-scale show of the artist’s work in three decades. It is being held at Hawthorne Fine Art and will feature more than 20 paintings.Kept largely private by a sprawling family of artists and intellectuals, the paintings of Clark Voorhees have very rarely been exhibited in public. All works in the exhibition will be offered for sale.In 1919, Voorhees and a small group of fellow Old Lyme artists began to spend their winters in Bermuda. Drawn by the mild climate and gorgeous colours, the artist eventually purchased a house on the island that he named ‘Tranquility’.Gallery owner Jennifer Krieger considers the exhibition an extraordinary honour. “It is exceedingly rare to uncover a hidden trove of work by a first-rate American Impressionist, especially one that so beautifully explores the many facets of a particular region,” she said. “Voorhees was an artist who was keenly sensitive to the subtleties of climate and geography and this group reflects the brilliant light and jewel-like colours peculiar to Bermuda.”The exhibition will be held at Hawthorne’s Manhattan showroom located at 74 East 79th Street between Park and Madison Avenues in New York. Viewing hours will be Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm while the exhibition is on view.
