Whaley the LPGA legend who took on the male pros

Robin Meade might be one of the stars of today’s Grand Slam Pro-Am but for those who follow the sport, her teacher Suzy Whaley might be better known.In July, 2003, the LPGA Tour player became the first woman to qualify and play in a men’s PGA Tour event in 58 years.Such a feat had only been achieved by the legendary Babe Zaharias.Whaley captured the Connecticut PGA Section Championship and as such qualified to play in the following year’s Greater Hartford Open, one of the stops on the PGA Tour circuit.Her appearance in that tournament created a media frenzy all over the world. She appeared on all of the American TV networks and since that historic week has granted more than 2,000 interviews.An 18-year veteran of the LPGA Tour, Whaley received the Nancy Lopez Golf Achievement Award earlier this year.Currently she’s the teaching professional at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
