This clamping was just plain mean

File photo by Akil SimmonsFormer Mayor of Hamilton Sutherland Medeiros with a wheel clamp which is now being used to crack down on illegal parking.

October 16, 2012Dear Sir,Last Saturday afternoon, I went shopping at the Supermart on Front Street and parked my car in the car park opposite. I was in the store for less than 20 minutes. When I came out my car had been clamped. As it was a Saturday, I thought (absolutely my error) that there would be no charge for parking. However, when the government clamping man came to unclamp my car, he cheerfully told me that “a lot of people think that the car park belongs to the Supermart”. In fact, he had clamped a number of other vehicles along with mine. I had to pay $100 to have my car unclamped.Fortunately, the clamping man was busy clamping other vehicles, so I did not have to call and wait to be unclamped, but when did it become normal practice for a car get clamped for being parked without a ticket for less than 20 minutes? I could have understood getting a parking ticket, but clamping? Really? That’s just plain mean.I have written to the Supermart and suggested that they put a large sign on their door advising their customers that the parking lot opposite their store is not their’s and that shoppers should purchase a parking voucher or they risk getting their car clamped.I am writing this letter to the Editor to warn motorists who are parking in all Government parking lots make sure that you pay to park and ensure sure that you are not 20 minutes over due, because you are going to get clamped and its going to cost you $100.A SOUSADevonshirePs I got really angry at the young man who clamped my car and I swore at him. Not nice of me and if you are reading this, I apologise.
