TV star to tee it up at Slam
TV celebrity Robin Meade will play alongside Masters champion Bubba Watson in the upcoming PGA Grand Slam of Golf . . . and her American audience know all about it after she made the announcement on her HLN’s Morning Express show.Meade will play in the Pro-Am event in the day before the 36-hole tournament begins as will Golf Channel personalities Gary Williams, the host of Morning Drive, and Michael Breed, host of The Fix, as well as TV announcer and analyst Ian Baker-Finch, the 1991 Open Champion, who will be the Slam’s TNT broadcast commentator“Robin is new to golf and has instantly become a great ambassador for the game,” said David Charles, Senior Director of Championships for The PGA of America.“She could not hide her excitement this morning when she revealed she’d be paired with Bubba Watson in Bermuda. As our President Allen Wronowski has said: ‘Robin’s enthusiasm for the game is infectious’.”Organisers believe Meade’s participation will help the growth of women’s golf.Each day this week, through her show “Morning Express with Robin Meade”, she is sharing her golf experience with viewers, and she is particularly targeting new golfers like herself. The segments are also appearing on pga.com.“I can’t believe it took me so long to even try golf,” said Meade. “I used to mutter under my breath if my husband had a charity tournament to play. Now I’m looking to see what I can play in next. I’m definitely not the future Annika (Sorenstem), but I’m loving the game, the social connection, and the challenge.”Next week’s Slam features Watson, defending champion Keegan Bradley, British Open winner Ernie Els and US Open champion Webb Simpson.Spectators will be able to request autographs, take pictures, and in some cases, chat with the four stars.Tickets are still available for the Pro-Am on October 22 as well as the two days of competition on October 23 and 24.Tickets can be purchased at the Port Royal Golf Course, online at pga.com and at the Washington Mall on Wednesday between 11.30am and 2:00pm. Individual day tickets are $20 and weeklong passes are selling for $50. Fans who buy tickets in advance will get two for the price of one.The tournament is offering a $1.35 million purse, with the winner receiving $600,000, second place $300,000 third place $250,000 and fourth place $200,000.
