Applicants sought for Cultural Legacy Fund grants
Bermuda’s arts and cultural community is being invited to apply for another round of grant funding from the Cultural Legacy Fund.A total of $50,000 is available, according to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.“The [CLF] aims to give a significant boost to Bermuda’s culture, heritage and arts through strategic, focused investment in the form of financial grants,” a release stated.Economy Trade and Industry Minister Patrice Minors said that the CLF demonstrates Government’s commitment to the “development, promotion and support of culture and the arts in Bermuda”.“Our culture, folklife traditions and our heritage define us as a people by invoking in us a sense of identity, pride and love for who we are,” she said.“So the goals of the CLF aim to support those organisations and individuals who will keep our culture alive by protecting, nurturing and preserving our heritage.”In February, the CLF distributed $75,000 to successful applicants. Another $75,000 was allocated for disbursement in the budget for the current financial year, which started in April.The fund received a $108,000 boost from the Bermuda 2009 Charitable Trust which disbanded and made a final distribution of assets in May this year.“The CLF is there to foster excellence in culture, heritage and the arts; to increase access and participation and to facilitate development and growth. What better way to utilise the funds?” asked Trust Chairman Conchita Ming at the time of the donation.A Government spokesperson said that the windfall can be disbursed over a range of fiscal years as it is not subject to the normal budgeting cycle.Persons have until December 1 to apply for grants.Applications are available at the Community and Cultural Affairs Department on the 4th floor of the Dame Lois Browne Evans building.
