National squad players absent again
Bermuda’s national squad cricketers remain conspicuous by their absence as a training session on Wednesday was attended by almost as many coaches as players.Despite coach David Moore stating the importance of early preparation ahead of next April’s Division Three Championships, only about five players attended the session at the National Sports Centre, less than the average of ten who have been showing up since training started a couple of weeks ago.Over 40 players, 34 of them local, were selected last month to make up the training squad. The coaches at Wednesday’s session included assistant coach Clevie Wade, fast bowling coach Lorenzo Tucker and former captain Irving Romaine who has been invited to the sessions. Another session has been scheduled tomorrow at the stadium.“At the moment we’ve got five coaches there and they’re ready to do their job, so I’m pleased with the coaching staff’s turn-out,’ said Moore earlier this week.“It’s important we do our job and hopefully the players will be encouraged to turn out. Life is full of choices and I respect everyone’s choices. If people have to make a choice to spend more time with their family or concentrate on their work, then maybe something like cricket has to be put aside so that they can spend more time with their family or develop their career.“It’s a choice we have to make and from a cricket perspective I fully understand this is an amateur game, but there has to be a minimum commitment from players.”
