Health clinic reopens after upgrade

A “new and improved” Somerset Health Clinic has opened its doors after an upgrade.Minister of Health Zane De Silva announced infrastructure improvements to the facility including a new air-conditioning system, new furniture and remodelled walls, when he officially unveiled the refurbishment.On Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, oral health services will be available to senior citizens and school-aged children between 8.30am and 3.30pm. Tuesday mornings are reserved for maternal health services between 9am and 11am. On Wednesdays, Department of Health nutritionist Mellonie Furbert will offer one-on-one nutritional counselling. This service is by appointment only.Also, the first and third Wednesday afternoons of each month will serve as a Seniors Wellness Clinic. Operating between 2pm and 4pm, this clinic is specially designated for those community members aged over 65.Mr De Silva said: “Previously, this was only held once a month but I am pleased to announce that we are now extending this to twice a month in order to accommodate a greater volume of people.”The Minister also said that although all services are free to the public, those needing medication will be charged a small fee.“The Ministry of Health expects that these Somerset Clinic services will help identify hypertension and diabetes earlier in our population, and assist in monitoring those already diagnosed.“The opportunity for regular conversations with healthcare professionals on aspects of wellness and prevention will go a long way in improving the general health of our adults and children.”He also highlighted the hours of other Senior Wellness Clinics.“Other Senior Wellness Clinics are held at Victoria Street Health Centre every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and at the St George’s Health Centre, located at 1 Old Military Road, St George’s. The wellness clinic in St George’s operates on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm,” added the Minister.“In closing, I would like to thank the Department of Health’s Community Health Nurses, who are the lifeblood of this clinic, for all that they do to improve the health of our Island.”
