Brown still committed to Cougars

New national team assistant Dennis Brown

Bermuda assistant coach Dennis Brown insists his new role in the national team set-up will not affect his domestic duties as head coach of Devonshire Cougars.Brown is currently helping newly appointed Bermuda coach Andrew Bascome prepare the Island for the next month’s Digicel Caribbean Cup while also setting his sights on a sustained assault on the Premier Division title with Cougars.Brown and Bascome, childhood friends who also played together at the international level, were last week given the opportunity to lead Bermuda at the region’s flagship football tournament.Bermuda will play against St Martin, Puerto Rico and hosts Haiti with the two top teams advancing to the second round of the competition. While he will be busy working with the national team’s players over the next few weeks, Brown is adamant his new position will not have a negative effect on his coaching duties at ‘the Den’.“This will not have any impact on my role at Devonshire Cougars. I’m the assistant coach and that would still allow me to coach at club level,” said Brown. “Ultimately I would like to work at the youth level at the National Academy but will assist at the national level where needed.“It’s a pleasure to be coaching with Andrew. He and I have basically grown together in the game, firstly as players from the national youth squad before we both got into the senior national team as 16-year-olds.“His record speaks for itself and it will be great to once again be reunited with him in a coaching capacity.”With the Digicel Cup just a few weeks away, Brown and Bascome are faced with a tall order given the short time frame they have to work with.Although he is cautiously optimistic about Bermuda’s chances of progressing, Brown reckons the competition will be an important stepping stone for upcoming tournaments including next year’s Island Games to be held on local soil.“Realistically, trying to try to get a team ready in four weeks is a big ask. As a new coach, Drew will want to stamp his own methodology on the team and that will take time, but we will make sure that the team does their best.“Realistically we should be aiming to win the Island Games 2013 which will be held in Bermuda next year.”
