Opti sailors shine at CORK regatta

Bermuda’s junior sailors did the Island proud at last weekend’s CORK Optimist Regatta in Kingston, Ontario.Siblings Ceci and Mikey Wollman, James Amaral and Campbell Patton all produced top-ten performances to underline the Island’s potential at this level.Ceci Wollman (Red Fleet) led Bermuda’s charge by claiming overall honours after mastering variable conditions on Lake Ontario and sailing consistently throughout the regatta.Brother Mikey was equally as impressive, claiming top honours in the Blue Fleet and finishing second overall behind his sister. The pair’s solid performances drew praise from Bermuda Sailing Association (BSA) president Tim Patton who accompanied the youth sailors to Ontario. He said: “The Wollman kids have been on the road doing regatta after regatta for the past five or six weeks and I think they are sailing very, very well. Ceci and Mikey have clearly developed during the time they have been away competing.”Also competing were James Amaral and Campbell Patton who is the son of president Tim.Amaral placed fifth in the Red Fleet and eighth overall while Patton was fourth in the Blue Fleet and ninth overall.“James has improved dramatically since I last saw him sail . . . he’s on fire,” Patton added. “Campbell relished the heavy conditions and was the top boat on the final day of the regatta with a second and a fourth.”The waters off Kingston offer some of the best freshwater sailing in the world. Situated at the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the head of the St. Lawrence River, the combination of land mass, islands and thermal effects produce excellent wind and wave conditions with very little current.Patton said on the whole Bermuda’s sailors handled the variable conditions well.“We had a little bit of everything and our sailors were equal to the task,” he said. “It was wonderful to see the Bermuda boats doing well, in particular Ceci and Mikey Wollman.“Bermuda did incredibly well in the CORK Regatta.”Last weekend’s regatta comprised of 70-boats that competed in three different age groups. The trio of Ceci and Mikey Wollman and Campbell Patton are now due to compete at the upcoming Canadian National Championships to be held in Vancouver.
