Perozzi to fight top American in Bermuda

Bermuda's Teresa Perozzi will face the unbeaten Tori Nelson for three world titles at Southampton Princess later this year.

Bermuda’s Teresa Perozzi will rest her World Boxing Association (WBA) women’s middleweight title on the line against highly ranked American Tori Nelson while also vying for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight title on home canvas later this year. The ten-round unification championship bout is slated for Saturday, October 13 at the Poinciana Ball Room at Southampton Princess.Tickets for the upcoming fight are due to go on sale in early September.Mother of one Perozzi is the current WBA female middleweight champ while the unbeaten Nelson is the reigning Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) champion.Southpaw Perozzi landed the then vacant WBA female middleweight belt with a split decision win over American Lorissa Rivas in Trinidad last December. She then successfully defended her title with a unanimous points decision over Rivas’ compatriot April Ward on home soil last March. Her pro record currently stands at 9-4-1.Nelson, who goes by the fight name of ‘Sho Nuff’, captured the WIBA middleweight title via a unanimous points decision against veteran Vashon Living in her native Virginia earlier this year. Her pro record stands at 6-0-1.commenting on her upcoming bout, Perozzi said she’s looking forward to fighting before the home crowd for the second time this year and is confident she can overcome her American opponent.“I’m very excited to fight at home again and feel confident of my chances as long as I train how I need to . . . harder than ever before,” she told The Royal Gazette. “I’ve already started my training program and just trying to get back into the discipline of things.”Perozzi had things her own way with Ward in her previous outing in a ten-round championship bout that went the distance at Berkeley School Gym. But she could face much sterner opposition from the highly ranked Nelson this time around. The fan of late heavyweight champ Joe Frazier is the top ranked female boxer in the United States and third in the world. She is also a past WBC world middleweight champion and three-time Maryland/Washington DC Golden Gloves winner.Outside of the ring, mother of two Nelson is a fitness fanatic and Christian.“My faith in the Lord is what continues to guide me through all challenges in life whether it is inside of the ring or outside of the ring,” she stated on her website. “I am a mother, boxer and a Christian.“I have 3 B’s in my life; the bible, my babies and boxing. We all go to church, I take care of my babies and we all go to the gym.”Perozzi said she isn’t bothered by Nelson’s impressive pro record.“Her undefeated record doesn’t intimidate me in the least,” she said. “I’m a good fighter and want to take on the best competition out there.”Earlier this year Nelson’s WBC female middleweight title was vacated. She was unable to defend her title due to a lack of “willing opponents”.
