Beach Tennis champs back to defend title
Alex Mingozzi and Mateo Marighella will be back on local sand next weekend to defend their ITF Beach Tennis International title at Horseshoe Bay.The Italian pair avenged their 2010 loss to Alesandro Calbucci and Michele Cappelletti last year, with the 2010 champions also returning to get their crown back.Mingozzi and Marighella won the 2008 and 2009 editions of the championships before reclaiming the showpiece last year in grand fashion.Tony Brannon, event co-founder and tournament director, said he was expecting an exciting two days that was sure to throw up some surprises as well as some sensational beach tennis weather permitting.“The champions from Italy are returning as well as 2010 champions Alesandro Calbucci and Michele Cappelletti,” said Brannon. “We certainly expect more entrants than last year. Some people have booked rooms at the hotel and haven’t even registered with us yet.“Registration will be accepted up until 30 minutes before play begins.”Brannon expects some top performances in the ladies division with a number of teams coming in from Italy and Brazil.Professional players will be vying cash prizes, making the tournament a top tier event.First, second, third and fourth place professional men and women finishers will be rewarded.Local players will also get a chance to showcase their skills on Sunday in the amateur competition.Brannon’s only worry is the weather on both days.“Our expectations will be high as long as Mother Nature co-operates,” he said.“The past two years we had a hurricane pass by and there were issues with serious surf and beach erosion so we need good weather this time around in order to put on a good event.”Also on tap is a mixed-doubles event for amateurs. On Saturday, August 25, the event kicks off with men’s and ladies pro divisions, starting at 10am with amateur doubles at 1pm.Amateur men’s and ladies’ events begin 10am on Sunday, August 26, while the pro finals will take place in the afternoon.
