Young people will end racism
July 31, 2012Dear Sir,On the subject of race in this community, I have come to the conclusion that the this issue will be settled by our children. They will have no Big Conversation, also it is unlikely the media will be eternally addicted junkies to a needed fix of black and white. Dare I suggest a utopian millennium of racial brotherhood when we embrace the injunction of scripture, “Love thy neighbour as thy self”? The answer is no, not without the life changing power of the Gospel of Christ. The hope is this: Our children will see their fellow Bermudians as us and they will agree or disagree on more substantive reasons. Love and hate will remain, considering the fallen nature of man. When the demagogues and all their besotted ilk have gone on to their reward it will mean there’s no one left to water the orchard of racial prejudice and bigotry so these wretched trees will no longer bear fruit and die for good. These sentiments will not engender warm and fuzzy feelings, but I believe what has been stated is true. How often do we hear people say race will always be an issue? This is not true as is evidenced by the social contract our young are currently writing by the way they live. Is it all love and goodwill? No, but it is most encouraging and provides a good foundation for optimism for the future. The next generation will view this society with different eyes and disparities will vanish far more than where we are today. They will be less inclined to see any and every difficulty they experience as a race issue simply because the players are black and white. The races will know each other in the market place, employment and socially but will have the normal human relations issues not driven solely by race. Imagine this: There are people that are revolting, selfish, unfriendly, hateful and mean spirited just because they want to be, both black and white.WAYNE B SCOTTSouthampton
