Police warn of counterfeit Bermuda bills

Residents should be on the lookout for fake Bermuda cash said to be making the rounds on the Island.According to the Bermuda Police Service, the Financial Crime Unit is aware that counterfeit $100, $50 and $20 notes are currently in circulation.The counterfeit bills have serial numbers of D/1 019625, D/2 509282 and D/2 595819.A Police spokesman said: “Business owners, vendors and individuals alike are advised to be vigilant regarding these denominations.“This is a public holiday where there will be a high volume of local currency in circulation, [so] we ask that you take note of the individual or individuals passing these notes.“The public is encouraged to check for the incorporated security features of genuine currency, such as paper quality and embedded watermarks.”It is a criminal offence to pass, possess, make or reproduce counterfeit currency, with penalties as high as five years’ imprisonment.Anyone with information about incidents in which counterfeit currency is being circulated is asked to contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011.
