My high-five for 2012
Happy New Year and may 2013 be an even better one for all of you.As the New Year approaches I want to reflect on my top five sporting feats of 2012. While this was very difficult as there were several outstanding performances worldwide, my top five is as follows:Coming in at fifth place is Andy Murray’s tennis heroics as he finally broke his Grand Slam duck by winning the US Open final against Novak Djokovic.Andy broke the English curse by ending a 76-year wait for an English male Grand Slam champion. The feeling was electric as the much anticipated wait was about to end.It took some four hours and 54 minutes. Murray and the whole of England were relieved after he had previously lost four Grand Slam finals. Having accomplished such a feat the next big thing for Murray to achieve is winning Wimbledon in England. In fourth is Somerset’s outstanding annihilation of former Cup Match champions St. George’s at Somerset Cricket Club.Somerset did what many didn’t think they were capable of doing against a very strong St. George’s team.St. George’s never looked the same team as they lacked unity and grit when they needed it most.Somerset’s decision to have veterans Jeff Richardson and Albert Steede added to their coaching staff made a tremendous difference. Somerset not only beat St. George’s but destroyed them like never before, thus leaving cricket fans stunned and longing for more cricket with so much time left in the day.Third place in my top five is the Ryder Cup golf victory by Europe. As I sat and watched in dismay, my mouth dropped, baffled, stunned, and shocked to the point that I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. At the start of the final day, USA led Europe 10-6 a margin that even the golf purist never dreamed could be overturned.USA only needed 4½ points to win the Ryder Cup. To the surprise of many, Europe fought back, game by game, as some of the best golfers USA had to offer got beaten, one by one. With the score tied 13-13 and only two games to go, plus the USA having Tiger Woods as their finisher, it still looked bleak for Europe until Martin Kaymer sunk his pressure putt on the 18th hole giving Europe a 14-13 lead, thus retaining the Cup. For a sports purist this was one of the most amazing comebacks ever. With my top two finalists being difficult to choose I went with Mo Fara and Usain Bolt dominating at the summer Olympics in England. What these two athletes achieved was totally outstanding.Firstly, Britain’s Mo Fara won the 10,000 metres and then went on to win the 5,000 metres against some of the best long distance runners in the world. The Kenyans and Ethiopians previously dominated these two events. As Mo ran down the final stretch the Olympic stadium erupted like never before. The commentators were cheering and shouting his name.To see Mo cross the finish line in first place and winning a second gold medal sent chills down my body. The whole of England stopped at that moment to watch that race. It was that sensational. However, Usain Bolt was not to be overshadowed as his quest to win the 100 metres and 200 metres had people on edge. Bolt would win the 200 metres convincingly with Jamaica making a clean sweep of medals. However, it was the 100-metre final that the world was waiting for, as previously in the Jamaican trials earlier in the year his countryman Yohan Blake had defeated him. With the world watching, Bolt would not disappoint as he went on to win the final, thrashing all with a time of 9.63 seconds and setting a new Olympic record. With a mark of respect for each other Fara and Bolt got up on the podium and traded celebrations. My number one sporting feat for 2012 is unfortunately watching Manchester City score two goals in added time to snatch the league title away from Manchester United. With United having blown an eight-point lead with just a few games to go both, United and City went into the final game tied on points, but with City having a better goal average. The United game ended with United beating Sunderland 1-0, thus putting pressure onr City to have to win. After 90 minutes City were losing 2-1 to QPR and the title looked certain to be heading to Old Trafford. The fourth official signalled five minutes of added time and after two minutes City struck a valuable goal to make it 2-2. But that wasn’t enough for them to wrestle the title away from United. With the clocking ticking down and with merely 30 seconds to go it all seemed over, but City launched one last attack. The ball was pumped forward and a loose ball scramble saw Balotelli slip it to Aguero who with literally with seconds left on the clock scored the decisive goal that would win City the title. Unbelievable, it still hurts!Well folks there you have it, my top five sporting feats of the year 2012.I am sure many of you will have your own which will differ, but that’s what makes sports interesting. One can only wonder what 2013 will bring. If it is anything like 2012 we are in for a treat.
