Punching security guard at football match earns man $2,000 fine, suspended sentence
Punching a security guard in the face cost a 36-year-old Pembroke man $2,000 in fines, a six month prison sentence suspended for two years in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.Ian DeSilva admitted the charge back in April when a social inquiry report was ordered.Following the outcome of that report, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner also ordered DeSilva to do two years on probation and submit to random drug testing.DeSilva told the court when he was charged that he only reacted after the security guard grabbed his arm at the FA semi-final match between Wolves and Dandy Town at Bernard Park on March 31.He told the court yesterday that he was “sorry for wasting the court’s time”.After hearing that he has a long list of previous convictions for similar offences, Mr Warner also ordered the defendant “to stay away from any location where football is played in Bermuda”.The Senior Magistrate also ordered DeSilva to “refrain from purchasing, buying, selling or using drugs”.The defendant asked: “Does that mean I can’t even play soccer?” Mr Warner replied: “Yes.”
