Bermuda’s Under-17 coach Scott Morton believes his side’s preparations couldn’t have gone better ahead of their pre-World Cup qualifiers in Jamaica next week.Morton’s side must top a group reduced to three teams Jamaica, Bermuda, and Antigua and Barbuda after Anguilla dropped out, while the best second placed team will also qualify for the next stage.Hosts Jamaica are overwhelming favourites to claim top spot, although Morton reckons Bermuda could catch the Reggae Boyz cold in next Wednesday’s opening group game.“Our first game is against Jamaica which is probably the best time to play them,” said Morton. “They’re the top team but I really want to see our players against them and I think we can hold our own.“The boys have a lot of confidence; we’ve been talking to them about the psychology of looking at matches and to always respect your opponent.”To prepare for the qualifiers Bermuda’s players have trained up to five times a week to ensure they are physically ready to cope with the demands of playing two games in three days. The team has also been working with the local physio Baden Cashmore twice a week at CedarBridge Academy to improve their strength, balance and conditioning. On top of their hectic training schedule at BFA Field and gym work at CedarBridge, the Under-17s have played several practice matches against the national Under-20 team who head to Puerto Rico later this month for their qualifying campaign.“Preparations have been excellent, the boys are energised to go and are now ready to start competing,” said Morton.“We’ve been training four times a week and five times a week every other week with a practice match thrown in at the end of the week against the Under-20s.“Two mornings a week the team have also been training up at CedarBridge working on their strength, muscle endurance and balance.“I think this team can hold their own with other Under-17 teams in the region, and I’m very excited to see them in action.”Gary Darrell’s Under-20 national team have been grouped against hosts Puerto Rico, Haiti and Barbados, with games to take place between July 23 31.
