Bermudian war vet is 90 today
Phillip Lamb, one of four black Bermudians who served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, celebrates his 90th birthday today.According to war historian Andrew Bermingham, Mr Lamb is one of the oldest living war veterans in Bermuda.Mr Lamb spent seven years and eight months in the military, serving as a leading aircraftman during the Second World War. During the war, he survived two plane crashes and a bombing raid in England that put him in the hospital. Since then, he has only returned to England once, in 1969, to look for some of the people he knew during the war.Mr Lamb said after leaving the military, he went back to school in Canada. He studied to become a diesel engine operator and then went to work with a railroad. Along with that job, Mr Lamb has also worked at Customs, as a bus driver and in several other positions during his working years.“I’ve been everything,” Mr Lamb said. “Everybody said I’ve had too many jobs.”Mr Lamb now enjoys his retirement on St David’s Island, where he is one of the oldest residents.
