Fiji legend Serevi holds skills camp for youngsters

Rugby sevens legend Waisale Serevi is sharing his vast knowledge of the game with Bermuda’s youngsters at a skills camps at Warwick Academy.Serevi, who is widely regarded as one of the best ever sevens players, will also be a guest at the Bermuda Rugby Football Union’s (BRFU) annual dinner at Hamilton Princess on Saturday night. The 44-year-old also excelled as 15s rugby, representing Fiji at the 1991 ‘99 and ‘03 World Cups, and played professionally for the Mitsubishi, Leicester, Stade Montois, Stade Bordelais and Staines rugby teams. The ‘Serevi Rugby’ camp runs until Monday for players aged 12-21 and is designed to improve players’ core skills such as the tackle, ruck, catch and pass.Serevi, who is based in Seattle, Washington, said: “I’m fresh off our US Serevi Academy in San Diego, where I trained 60 of America’s top young Sevens athletes with the help of New Zealand sevens’ coach Gordon Tietjens and Argentine great Santiago Gomez Cora.“On the heels of that successful experience, it made sense to consider the many programming requests we receive from rugby unions around the world.“Bermuda made a logical first stop on multiple levels: a motivated partner with a well crafted financial model, relative proximity to Seattle, and well defined goals.“We’re dedicated to growing the game of rugby by inspiring and instructing a new swath of youth players. We’re thankful for the opportunity to do this in Bermuda and can’t wait to touch down.”Former England skipper Lewis Moody will join Serevi at the BRFU’s annual dinner in a question and answer session. For more details email dinner@brfu.bm.
