Aaron Evans narrowly missed out on reaching the Olympic 800 metre standard while competing at the Trinidad National Championships at the weekend.Evans, along with Tre Houston and Arantxa King, travelled to the Caribbean in an attempt to make the Games marks in their respective events, although King has been given a wildcard for the Games.The 800 metre specialist won the final in a time of one minute, 46.69, with the standard set at 1:46.30.He will have two more chances to book his ticket to next month’s spectacle in London, travelling to Canada to compete in two more meets where he will face some stiff competition.Houston competed in the 200 metres finals and will have one more meet to try and reach the standard at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Mexico.The sprinter’s best time is 20.71 seconds and will need to run 20.65 seconds if he is to meet the standard.“This will be a heartbreaker for us if Aaron does not reach the qualifying standard but I have all confidence that he will reach it,” said Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson.“Aaron has been beaten only once this entire season and has not been challenged except at the NCAA 800m final where he stated he made a huge tactical error.“Watching Aaron run I feel he is capable of running in the 1:45 range with the right race and right conditions.“With the competition and this being every athletes last chance to reach the standard in Mexico, I’m sure Tre is going to go all out to meet the standard.”Also competing was King who won the long jump with a leap of 6.40 metres.Unfortunately for her, she had a few foul jumps including one that would have measured close to the qualifying mark of 6.90 metres which would have been the ‘A’ qualifying standard.“Even though Arantxa has been given the automatic spot for the Olympics she still wants to reach the standard which from a mental standpoint is a great position to be in going into London,” added Watson.“Arantxa will possibly give it one last chance in Canada towards her preparation towards London.”Lamont Marshall will also be travelling with Evans to Canada with his goal to meet the standard in the 1500m going for a time of 3:38.00 with his best time this year being 3:46.51.
