An award-winning film on the demise of the world’s oceans will screen at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this weekend.‘A Sea Change: Imagine A World Without Fish’ is narrated by American history teacher and filmmaker Sven Huseby, who visited Bermuda to show the film in 2009.Part of the Bermuda Documentary Film Festival weekend film series it’s about increasing acidity in the ocean due to human produced carbon dioxide.Mr Huseby was inspired to make the film after reading an article in the New York Times.In a previous interview, he told The Royal Gazette that the problem is the rate at which the ocean is acidifying. Microscopic ocean creatures, particularly calcifying organisms, zoo plankton and shelled organisms face a harder fight because of the increasing acidity.“As the oceans become increasingly acidic, it is more challenging for them to find the calcium carbonate they need to build their shells,” he said. “The problem is the worst for the infant forms of these animals. These organisms need time to evolve and adapt to the changes in the ocean.”The tiny creatures are important to humans, because we are both part of the food chain. Fish depend on these critters for survival, and one billion human beings depend on fish for their survival.The film screens 3pm Sunday at BUEI. It will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Tammy Trott, Government’s senior marine resources officer, and Samantha de Putron, associate scientist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science.Dr de Putron is conducting research on the effects of ocean acidification on the marine environment.‘A Sea Change’ will be followed by the more lighthearted ‘Goodbye First Love’ at 5.15pm. This is a sensual portrait of a woman in the wake of her first romance. The plot revolves around Camille, who falls in love with Sullivan. When he leaves her to travel the world, she charts his trip, looking forward to his return. Eventually, she gets on with her life, and finds a new love.
