Rambler's Captain wins again with dockside wedding ceremony
There was double reason for the crew aboard the 90ft maxi Rambler to celebrate after obliterating the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race record.Just hours after shaving 14 hours off the previous fastest time recorded in the 635 mile race, Rambler’s owner George David tied the knot with the boat’s cook Wendy Touton. The couple was married aboard Rambler that is currently moored at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC).In 2011 Mr David and his bride-to-be were plucked to safety after their yacht, Rambler 100, capsized off the Irish coast during the Fastnet Race. The mishap occurred just months after the 100ft maxi was the first boat to finish the biennial Transatlantic Race 2011, from Newport, Rhode Island to The Lizard in southwest England.Earlier this week, Mr David’s decade-old maxi Rambler shattered the Newport Bermuda Race record set by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket in 2002.The new mark now stands at 39 hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds.Rambler took full advantage of ideal racing conditions to launch their assault on the race record.“These were perfect conditions,” Mr David said. “We have reduced the record by 25 percent ... not bad for a boat that is now ten years old. This Rambler is the best boat I have ever owned!”
