United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan told the House of Assembly: “I am challenging The Royal Gazette and calling The Royal Gazette out” on the issue of fair and balanced reporting.Conceding that he didn’t ask the paper to “play up or glorify what I say”, Mr Swan charged the Island’s daily with bias and with not reporting the full news.Speaking during the motion to adjourn on Friday, Mr Swan also accused this newspaper of favouritism.“I want to call upon The Royal Gazette, the local newspaper, that balance and fairness reigns in this country, and that they play a part in it.”He said: “On more than one occasion in recent months, as the election draws near, I’ve had articles that have been excluded and cherry picked, and concerns that have been raised in the public forum that have not been considered.”Mr Swan continued: “Fairness is the hallmark of making Bermuda the best it can be.”Saying that “before an election is the only time the voters get an opportunity to be heard”, the St George’s West MP said: “Beginning in January, I challenged The Royal Gazette to lead a campaign to improve racial reconciliation.”Mr Swan said he had “asked them directly” and been turned down.“We cannot hoodwink our children any more. We need to tell them the truth,” Mr Swan said.He called for the One Bermuda Alliance to join him in criticising the alleged bias, saying:”We need to stand up for fairness. Call out the people that are showing you favouritism. It’s about what’s right.”
