Augustus claims maiden Bermuda Open title
Daniel Augustus came from four shots back to win his first ever Bermuda Open Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in a rain shortened tournament.Weather plagued this year’s Championship, forcing the committee to cancel two of the four rounds, with play only being completed on the first and third rounds. As a result this year’s event was a 36-hole tournament for the Professional and Amateur Divisions, and 18 holes for the Senior Divisions.Augustus, who was four shots behind defending champion Jordan Mitchell after the first round, completed his remarkable comeback in the third round when he overtook the leader. The newly crowned champion ended the event shooting 143, while Mitchell shot a 144 to finish second and Kevin Mumford rounded out the top three with a 149.“The elements made it very difficult for everyone, but it feels great to be the champion of your country’s championship,” said Augustus. “There was a bit of pressure on me in the sense that I would have less time to catch (Mitchell) up, especially after his first round.“I was four shots back and thinking I need to get two strokes off him in the final two rounds, but he didn’t have a good third round and I was able to catch him.”Mitchell shot an opening round of 69, while Camiko Smith and Augustus both fired 73 to be four back. The second round was called off due to inclement weather, leaving the eventual champion with less time to work with to stage a fightback. He didn’t need much time, however, reeling in Mitchell in just one round, the third, after shooting 70 with the American falling off the pace with a 75.“(Mitchell) really likes Port Royal so it was going to be tough but in the end I stayed focused.“I am really surprised because I hit the ball well but my putting wasn’t the best, and you would have expected everyone to shoot low scores on the first day and the wind was pretty easy on the first day.”In other categories, Mitchell Campbell (151) was crowned the men’s amateur champion after his second round of 74 jumped him ahead of David Smith (153) and Adam Mattatall (154).After nine years of competing for the ladies’ stroke play championship, Ann Symonds (178) added her name to the trophy after she was able to hold off the charge of junior golfer Elizabeth Parsons (183) and defending champion Katrin Burnie (184).Hav Trott (74) was successful in defending his senior title while Gladys Chambaz (90) was crowned the ladies senior champion.
