Teacher transfers

The Bermuda Union of Teachers has thrown its support behind the transfers of some 40 teachers within the Island’s middle and primary schools, despite the trauma it may cause. In fact, the move is a knock-on effect from the creation of permanent deputy principals — itself a welcome move — and in general, these are changes that should be supported. It does no harm for teachers to be exposed to different schools and colleagues and to work under different principals. Good practices from other schools can be exported and new approaches can be learned. This assumes that the teachers being moved are either strong and experienced, or that they show potential. The major danger is that poor teachers will be moved because it is easier to do that than to carry out the often lengthy and difficult process of dismissing them.Assuming that’s not the case, this move should be welcomed, so long as steps are taken to ensure that no school loses all of its best teachers at once.
