Burgess resigns from Cabinet

Derrick Burgess has resigned as Minister of Transport. In a statement issued last night, Mr Burgess mentioned a reported “discussion” he had, believed to be with his then Cabinet colleague Michael Scott inside the House of Assembly building on Friday, May 25.Mr Burgess said he had offered his resignation to Premier Paula Cox so that there would be no distractions from the Progressive Labour Party’s work in serving the public.“Most recently I was involved in a discussion with a colleague,” Mr Burgess said. “The aforementioned discussion has been reported in the press.“I can say that most of the media reports of the event are embellished and have very little resemblance as to what actually transpired.“Having said that, it is my belief that the Progressive Labour Party Government has a mighty work to do. I will not allow anything to distract from our Party’s effort to serve the people of Bermuda.“I have offered and the Premier has accepted my resignation as the Minister of Transport.”He added that “no public servant is bigger than the cause we serve”.“I am very grateful for every opportunity I have had to serve the people of Bermuda, either in my capacity as a trade unionist and more recently as a Cabinet Minister,” Mr Burgess said.“In both positions I have conducted myself in a manner worthy of the trust of the people that I have served.”Mr Burgess said he remained committed to the people of his constituency, Hamilton East, the ideals of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party and to the people of Bermuda.“This Government continues to represent the best choice for improving the lives of Bermudians and I intend to continue doing my part in that important work,” he added.
