TUC criticises KFC

KFC Bermuda Limited’s decision to take its dispute with the Bermuda Industrial Union to court has come under criticism. The Bermuda Trade Union Congress noted that the fast food eatery “has indicated its willingness to participate in the arbitration process” but said its action “goes against” Bermuda’s Trade Union Act.KFC filed in the Supreme Court this month calling for a judicial review of Economy Minister Patrice Minor’s decision to send the dispute to arbitration.Ms Minors’ ruling came after the collective bargaining agreement between KFC and the BIU was cancelled.“Clearly it appears that KFC is not willing to enter into the arbitration process,” said the BTUC spokesman. The BTUC also took issue with plans by KFC to rename the company and sign up present staff by June 1 without input by the BIU.The union spokesman warned that if KFC is successful in court other employers will follow suit.“It is for these reasons that BTUC members voice our grave concern,” the spokesman said. “If KFC is successful at seeking a judicial review and possibly winning the case, then other employers will also attempt to nullify their existing agreements with other local trade unions.”
