Police officers will row a million metres as part of a charity challenge to benefit the Sandys 360 sports and aquatic centre.The event, due to begin on July 12, will feature twelve officers from the Somerset branch of the police service using rowing machines at the gym.Stephanie Lee, marketing and communications co-ordinator for Sandys 360 said: “The Somerset branch of the Bermuda Police Service has been a huge supporter of Sandys 360 since inception.“Many of the police officers use Sandys 360 gym and pool for general exercise, and keep a close eye on the facility.“They also support us in other ways than just as a part of their job. Sergeant Derek Berry has acted as a liaison officer between Sandys 360 and the Somerset police.“He brought the idea of holding a swim-a-thon, which has grown into the Annual Wet n Wild Challenge.“This time, he, and 11 other members of the Somerset police have decided to take on another challenge, by rowing one million metres.”She explained that Sgt Berry came up with idea not just as a fundraiser but as a personal and physical challenge for the police service. One million metres equates to around 61 miles.“This challenge is offered by Concept2, the company that produces the rowing machines used in Sandys 360 gym.“The officers are training almost daily in the Sandys 360 gym and cross training in some of the other class offerings,” explained Ms Lee.“This event is to begin July 12. The twelve officers will be broken into groups of four members.“The groups will alternate rowing every eight hours, with each member rowing for a half-hour.“They will row continually and it is anticipated that the event will take approximately three days and 12 hours to complete.”She urged the public to support the officers in their feat.
