First Prev 1 2 Next Last
The BIU has ended its boycott of KFC.

Nearly six weeks to the day it was launched, Bermuda Industrial Union President Chris Furbert has called off the boycott against KFC Bermuda Limited in the lead up to arbitration. This after both sides submitted their terms of reference and nominees for the hearing to be headed up by lawyer Wendell Hollis at date to be set by mid June.Mr Furbert also produced the letter from Economy Minister Patrice Minors to both parties at a press conference held at BIU headquarters yesterday.Mr Furbert said the document “basically laid out the terms” for the arbitration process”.The Minister also called on both sides to “act in good faith and desist from taking any further action pending the decision of the arbitrator for the sake of good industrial relations, and in accordance with the spirit of the legislation”.“As a result of that the BIU will officially call off its boycott as of this minute,” said Mr Furbert. When asked what’s next he said: “I can’t tell you what this means for KFC but I can tell you that the BIU had a boycott against KFC that has been in place since April 13, and based on the request by the Minister the BIU is prepared to lift this boycott.”He said he is “not sure” when the arbitration is going to happen.“I know Wendell Hollis is the arbitrator and he is presently off Island receiving medical attention,” said Mr Furbert. But for now, as set out by the Minister, there will be no further action by either side outside of the arbitration process.Further action was defined in writing by the Minister and includes any “changes to employment contracts, changes to terms and conditions of employment, boycott and other forms of industrial action”.Mr Furbert noted that he called the conference “to give positive news to the general public”.After reading the letter from the Minister he said: “The boycott has been in place since April 13, and based on the request by the Minister the BIU is prepared to lift this boycott; I cannot speak on behalf of KFC.”He went on to say: “It’s a sad day when the BIU has to resort to industrial action to get a matter resolved.”“KFC forced our hand after they cancelled the collective bargaining agreement in December 2011, the boycott was implemented in April this year as a last resort,” he added.Efforts to reach a spokesperson from KFC by press time were unsuccessful.
