Former shipmates remember Atlantic voyages
The air was abuzz with seafaring tales during a reunion for the former Queen of Bermuda crew last night. The ship cruised between Bermuda and New York during the 1950s and 60s. Former staff from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand and England joined those from Bermuda for the first local reunion; a cocktail party at the Masterworks Museum. Two previous events have taken place in England, and the Bermuda event took a year of planning by Allen Soares, who joined the ship as a bellboy aged 15.“Everyone seems to be enjoying it very much,” said Mr Soares, now 66, as 120 former colleagues exchanged memories around him.“They’re all pulling out their photographs and talking about when we were much younger and had dark hair,” he said of the predominantly grey-haired crowd.Mr Soares explained that some of those from overseas had not been back to Bermuda in the 46 years since the ship last sailed.“They’ve definitely seen some changes. Bermuda is much busier these days, but overall still a friendly and enjoyable place,” he noted.Useful website: www.furnessbermudaline.com.
