Kirklands clinch Olympic qualification

Sailing siblings Jesse and Zander Kirkland qualified for the 2012 Olympics on the back of another solid display at the 49er World Championships in Croatia today.Competing in the Blue fleet for the second time this week, the local duo posted impressive finishes of second, third and seventh to advance to the Gold fleet and more importantly book their ticket to the London Games.Skipper Jesse said: "We qualified! The points were tight throughout the top of the fleet, including all of our competition for qualifying before racing today. We had a great day on the water with a 2, 3, 7. So, onto Gold Fleet tomorrow against the top 25 boats in the world."Today's solid showing catapulted the Kirklands from 17th to eighth in the overall standings heading into the business end of the regatta.With Olympic qualification already in the bag, the local sailors can now focus on qualifying for Saturday's medal race in Croatia.
