PLP in vigorous debate over Leroy Bean’s candidacy

Leroy Bean

Internal wrangling at the Progressive Labour Party over Leroy Bean’s general election candidacy continued on Monday night with a lengthy and heated discussion at a meeting of the party’s Central Committee, The Royal Gazette has learned. The meeting at Alaska Hall, the party’s Court Street headquarters, was informed by the Chairman of the candidate’s selection committee, Maynard Dill, that a decision had been made to drop Mr Bean from the list of approved candidates. But his supporters put forward a motion to have him rolled out as a candidate in two weeks time, sparking a debate about constitutional matters. The matter was referred to the Appeals Committee, which will make a final decision on Mr Bean’s candidacy within the next two weeks.Mr Bean was selected as the PLP’s candidate for constituency four, St George’s South, in August 2010 by branch members but has yet to be rolled out as the party’s official choice. He is also the PLP branch chairman for Hamilton East, where Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess is the sitting MP.Mr Bean’s detractors in the PLP are said to be incensed at activities during his tenure as a director at the Bermuda Land Development Company. But his supporters include his branch’s executives and Deputy Party Leader Derrick Burgess whose ministerial portfolio included the BLDC when Mr Bean was a director there.Auditor General Heather Matthews has accused former BLDC Chairman Ed Saunders and Mr Bean of being in a “fundamental conflict of interest” when they entered into a paid consultancy arrangement with the BLDC while they were directors of the company. The Public Accounts Committee is looking into the matter. The pair have argued that their consultancy work with the company was above board and within the law.And they have refused a request, supported by Premier Paula Cox that they repay the money.
