There was only one Par-la-Ville Park
April 27, 2012Dear Sir,It used to be our park — Par-la-Ville park. Now its hers. She has eight other ones:Queen Elizabeth Park, New Zealand, Queen Elizabeth Park, British Columbia, Canada Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda Queen Elizabeth Park, North Saskatchewan River valley parks system, Edmonton, Canada Queen Elizabeth Park, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, UK, Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada A lack of imagination is apparently common in the naming of parks. There was one Par-la-Ville Park. And now it is number nine of the above. When you eat your sandwich and contemplate the cats, you can think about a woman far away who rarely comes here, or thinks about here, and is very very well paid for doing that. Par-la-Ville means “by the park” in French. It was ours. It had history. It was named a long time ago when town ended right about there. Now town has grown, but the name was the same. This is how a thing becomes ours and unique. If parks can have their names changed for weird reasons, let’s change it back. Or name it something relevant. Someone suggested naming it after Ms Brangman of the Brangman Home. Why not name it after a Bermudian? Or after a reinsurance firm that brought a lot of money to the Island? Even that would be better.JOHN ZUILLPaget
