Government’s summer employment programmes will put hundreds of students to work
Hundreds of young people will be employed this summer as part of Government’s student summer employment programmes, Economy Minister Patrice Minors told MPs.And Ms Minors is appealing to the business sector to join in the efforts to keep students employed.Government runs two programmes — one by the Department of Labour and Training for college students and the other by the Community and Cultural Affairs Department for high school students.One hundred college students will take part in the ten-week programme and be given a $5,000 stipend for their efforts, the Minister said in the House of Assembly on Friday.Another 200 high school students will get “direct exposure and access to the workplace” in work shadow experiences during July and August.Ms Minors said that the high school programme had been oversubscribed with 296 students registered for the 200 jobs.The high school students will receive a stipend of $475 upon completion of their four-week work experience.The Minister appealed to businesses “despite the tough times, to consider extending summer employment to our young people this year”.She said: “Let’s work together to encourage Bermuda’s young people.“Employers seeking summer students should contact the Department of Labour and Training or revisit the applications that many have already submitted directly to the business partners across the Island.”
