The Inter-Agency Committee for Families and Children is hoping to reinvigorate efforts to tackle the growing issues facing the Island.The organisation was founded by Martha Dismont of the Family Centre in 1995 to bring together the Island’s service providers.It recently launched a push to find new supporters, members and volunteers, and create better support for affiliated groups.Mrs Dismont said: “The issues that brought us together in 1995 were the need to address growing social challenges collaboratively, ensuring quality outcomes and making the most of limited resources.“Those issues are far more pressing today, but just as we knew 17 years ago, intelligent and coordinated action is required now in order to prevent worse problems down the road.”The organisation is to work on introducing a national children’s agenda for advocacy within the next six months.“Hopefully it won’t take that long, but we wanted to set a deadline,” Mrs Dismont said.“Given the challenges the Island is facing, we feel we need to work even more closely together so that we can respond to issues together and make sure that the changes that need to be made are made.”The IAC also celebrated the accomplishments of several agencies and charities that have achieved accreditation and certification in the last year. They were presented with plaques for their efforts.Among the honoured organisations were the Bermuda Youth Counselling Services, the Bermuda National Gallery and the Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority.
