Phillips named MVP after team lift Slovakia title
Bermudian Sullivan Phillips has been rewarded with a championship and an MVP award after helping BC Prievidza to the 2012 Slovakian Men’s National Basketball League title on Tuesday night.Prievidza beat top seeds Komarno 3-1 in the best-of-five series to hoist the cup in Phillips’ first year at the club.Add to the triumph his Bosman MVP title and First Team honours for both the All-Slovakian team and the All-Bosman team, the Bermuda international enjoyed an exceptional season even by his lofty standards.“It feels great to finalise another goal and continue to try and keep representing Bermuda to the fullest,” said Phillips.“It’s a very good feeling when other coaches nominate you as the best among your peers, it is not only very humbling but very pleasing.“Rumour had it that I was supposed to be MVP but there was a big rift about it, so they say. I had an idea of the prize because a reporter told me a few weeks back, but you don’t listen to rumours, you just play and if recognised you humbly accept.”The Bosman team and MVP title are given to those players that not by birth are part of the European Union (EU), although getting dual citizenship in a recognised EU country, players can play in any European country without a visa or work permit. After suffering defeat in the first game of the series on the road, Prievidza reeled off three successive wins, including a one-point win at Komarno to get over the final hurdle. The road to the final wasn’t an easy one either with the champions having to beat third seeds Nitra in the semi-final and Levice in their first-round match.Phillips averaged 13 points per game in the finals to help the team lift the title. The title is his third, adding to winners’ medals from England and Cyprus. He played in England, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Cyprus before heading to Slovakia.All-Slovakian first team: Johnathon Jones, Komarno, G; David Godbold, Prievidza, G; Anthony Jones, Handlova, G/F; Sullivan Phillips, Prievidza, G/F; Lamar Roberson, Svit, F.All-Bosmans Slovakian team: David Godbold, Prievidza, G; Sullivan Phillips, Prievidza, G/F; Lamar Roberson, Svit, F; Martins Berkis, Svit, F; Sinisa Bilic, Komarno, F
