“Don’t shoot the messenger,” was the comeback from Bermuda Broadcasting Company CEO Rick Richardson, following Government allegations that ZBM was in possession of stolen property.Mr Richardson told The Royal Gazette that an Internal Audit report posted to the station was “information that we believe concerns a large number of people, and should be out there in the public domain”.After the station aired details of possible financial inconsistencies investigated at the Department of Communication and Information Services, Civil Service head Donald Scott accused the broadcasters of having “a confidential report that was stolen from Government offices and leaked to Mr Gary Moreno at ZBM news”.An internal enquiry has been launched by Government. The station reported that the documents were sent to them through the post.Mr Richardson said of the report: “At this point, all I am really interested in the content and the facts. Gary is assuring me it is a bona fide document, and the facts are straight.”The station head said his top concern was: “Are you reporting conjecture, rumours, or do you have some factual information? Is this a legitimate story? Yes.”Of the Government investigation, Mr Richardson said: “They can’t shoot either of the messengers.”He said that if ZBM became “the focus of a wider investigation”, he would discuss the issue further with Mr Moreno.Mr Richardson added: “There is a broader debate with this item, and other items, and the peoples’ right to know versus confidentiality.“We most often come down on the right to know, unless we are convinced otherwise.”
