Axed ferry service to be reinstated
Rockaway ferry commuters who objected to the planned cancellation of the 7.55 am service were “ecstatic” to hear the service will be reinstated, at least for the time being. The service will be continued for now, until school breaks for the summer holidays.Transport Minister and Deputy Premier Derrick Burgess said: “After meeting with commuters who use the ferry service, we have decided to keep the 7.55am ferry trip from Rockaway to Hamilton until at least June 30.“We recognise the importance of the service and will make every attempt to retain it within our financial constraints. Ultimately, the decision will be made based on how many people use the service and the cost to operate it.”Two of the commuters who objected with a letter carrying 250 signatures, Alexa Roberts and Maria MacPherson said: “We’re ecstatic to hear that our ‘advocacy in action’ worked.“We appreciate that this will be monitored to ensure that we are financially able to continue this service. But the commuters of Rockaway are satisfied with this proposal.”The Minister said that use of the Rockaway service has decreased since the economic downturn but Rockaway remains an important element of Bermuda’s ferry service.Summer ferry schedules are now available at the Ferry terminal and online at www.seaexpress.bm and www.marineandports.bm.
